What is a BIMI record?
Reviewed by Prabath Thalangama · Last updated
A BIMI record lets mailbox providers show your brand logo next to messages that pass DMARC. It is a TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain with an l= link to an SVG logo and, for Gmail and Apple Mail, an a= link to a Verified Mark Certificate. This checker reads the record and flags a missing certificate.
BIMI only works on top of enforced DMARC: the domain needs p=quarantine or p=reject. Providers that support it, including Gmail, Yahoo and Apple Mail, still decide for themselves whether to show the logo.
The logo must be in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure profile, and most providers that display logos require a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or Common Mark Certificate (CMC).
How do I check BIMI?
- Enter the domain in your From address.
- Check the record's l= and a= values, then confirm the domain's DMARC policy with the DMARC checker.
How to read the results
- Record
- The v=BIMI1 TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.
- l=
- HTTPS URL of the SVG logo.
- a=
- HTTPS URL of the PEM certificate (VMC or CMC) proving the right to use the logo. Missing a= is flagged, because most major providers require it.
Common BIMI problems
Record is fine but no logo appears
DMARC isn't at quarantine or reject, the provider requires a VMC, or the provider hasn't picked it up yet. Logos also need good sending reputation.
Logo rejected
The SVG isn't SVG Tiny PS: no scripts, no external references, square aspect ratio, and a title element. Convert it with a tool that targets that profile.
Examples and command-line equivalents
A BIMI record
default._bimi.example.com. TXT "v=BIMI1; l=https://example.com/brand/logo.svg; a=https://example.com/brand/vmc.pem"Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Verified Mark Certificate for BIMI?
For Gmail and Apple Mail, yes (or a Common Mark Certificate). Some providers show logos from the record alone. A VMC requires a registered trademark.
Does BIMI improve deliverability?
Not directly. It needs strong authentication, which helps, and a visible logo may help recognition, but providers don't treat BIMI as a ranking signal.
